I had the chance to explore the whole main island of Bucas Grande during my 2-day stay in Socorro on May 2013. Riding in a habal-habal - the only mode of inland public transportation available in the island, we visited seaside up to the highland communities of Socorro.
Socorro is a 4th class municipality in the
Province of Surigao del Norte. It covers the well-known
Bucas Grande Group of Islands where pristine islands and beaches; enchanting
Sohoton National Park; and the infamous Jellyfish Sanctuary are located.
I saw the impact of tourism in the economy of Socorro and in the whole province of Surigao del Norte. Comparing to other destinations, I don’t see any “bad tourism” in this humble island; people are protecting the source of their livelihood- no abuse and they know how to manage and accommodate large no. of visitors coming "in and out" of their paradise.

Of course, not all communities in Socorro depend on the
benefits of these tourist spots. Majority of the villagers are still living and
sourcing their livelihood from the usual fishing and farming. On my short stay and working in Socorro, I was able to get photos of its "other side" - the communities away from its famous destinations. These photos inspired me
more to continue this job- to work- to travel- to live. Photos I must see
on days when I needed to reflect and remind myself why I love to do this
job;why I love to travel; and why I love to visit other communities and meet
people.
