Moriones Festival is an annual religious festival held during Holy Week (starting Palm Sunday up to Easter Sunday) in my home province- Marinduque. The festival re-enacts the seven-day search for Longinus. Men and women wearing mask and costumes replicating the looks of a Roman Centurion are called Moriones/Morions. They usually roams in the streets searching for Longinus, and also serve as their way of "Panata"(devotion) or "Pagpapahirap sa Sarili"(penitence). Moriones came from the Spanish root-word morion which means mask.
The highlight and final event of the festival is the Pugutan- a theater presentation featuring the story of Longinus - Roman centurion who was blind in one eye, was one of the soldiers present at Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. When Longinus plunged his lance into the side of Christ to check if He was dead, a drop of Christ's blood splashed onto his blind eye and its sight was restored. Later, according to some versions of the legend, Longinus was also one of the guards at Christ's tomb, and was a witness to the Resurrection. These miracles impelled him to convert to Christianity, earning the ire of the authorities and leading to his arrest and execution.

Province is composed of six (6) towns namely Mogpog, Sta. Cruz, Torrijos,
Buenavista, Gasan, and Boac (the capital town). Take note that each town
celebrates Moriones Festival; meaning festival can be watched in every town of the province.

ReplyDeleteMalapit na pala ang Semana Santa. Ito ang panahon na maraming event sa Pinas. Moriones is one them and that is what I want to see.
ReplyDeleteAyon sa nabasa ko, si Longinus daw yung sundalo na nagsabi na "Siya nga ang anak Diyos" habang nakabayubay si Jesus sa krus.
Tagal ko nang gusto pumunta dito to experience this.

ReplyDeleteThe highlight of the event is on BLACK Saturday, sa umaga may parade ng mga morion and at night SENAKULO or "the pugutan" - a theater presentation re-enacting the beheading of Longinus.
Take note: mahirap pagsakay sa bus at barko sa dami ng pasahero...so better na 1 day ahead kayo or friday dapat nasa marinduque na.pwede na rin kayo magpa advance booking sa Jac Liner (RORO Bus) sa kamias (kung galing kayo ng Metro Manila para mas sigurado. :)

ReplyDeleteDo you think the Grand Parade on MON and TUE is full of morions? We'd like to stay away from vast tourists on FRI-SAT-SUN. Is it really a grand parade comparing to the prev years?
ReplyDeleteNot so sure Ksh- usually morions are roaming around barangays from monday to Friday as they are searching for Longinus (re in-acting). The best days to experience and witness moriones are saturday and sunday
